Fortunately in my career, I have come across some exceptional mentors. The majority of them in one shape or form will always state that if you or your company does not embrace change, you will never be in first place. Society is constantly evolving and so is healthcare in general. In order to provide excellent healthcare, the industry must constantly evolve and those within the industry must be willing to accept change. New technology and healthcare delivery constantly changes for the benefit of the patient and the healthcare provider. Thoman’s goal as the new CEO was to implement these changes immediately and he did just that. However, the results were not favorable.
On October 18, 1999, Xerox reported flat revenue again for the third quarter (Xerox, 2013). Although Thoman’s plan had a sense of urgency and was focused, the new CEO destroyed the organizations culture, sales structure, customer relationships, and morale (Southwestern University, 2013). After13 months, Thoman was relieved of his duties as CEO at Xerox. Thoman’s plans to implement change failed because he never took the time to share his vision with the organization, speak with employees and customers about ideas and concerns, and implement a task force to oversee the project. Thoman’s ideas were not aligned with the customer, employees, and the organization as a whole. If Thoman took the time to speak with employees and the customer, he would have had a better understanding of Xerox’s current situation. As a result, Thoman would have been able to create a task force based on the information obtained and employees would have supported his plan which would have resulted in success.
As stated previously, change will come and in order to be successful, organizations must embrace it. However, the organizations that do well with implementing change are those that encourage support from their key stakeholders. When an organization solicits feedback from their key stakeholders on how to implement change, the road is smoother than those who do not.
