Business Research Ethics
Throughout the history of business, business research has played a vital role in managing a business. As defined by Cooper & Schindler (2011), business research is a systematic inquiry that provides information to guide managerial decisions. Without proper research a business stands a chance of missed opportunities for growth, mismanaging funds, planning, and lowering the cost of goods. There were different criminal charges for each drug involved in the research. The United States government alleges that from 1998 to 2003 GSK unlawfully promoted Paxil for treating depression in patients under the age of 18. The government also indicates that GSK participated in publishing a misleading medial journal article that misreported a clinical trial of Paxil as well as misbranding and providing false and misleading information regarding its use to patients under the age of 18. The United States also alleges that from 1999 to 2003 GSK promoted Wellbutrin for weight loss, the treatment of sexual dysfunction, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, among other off-label uses when it was approved only for Major Depressive Disorders. GSK promoted the use of these products by speakers to promote this drug for unapproved uses. Avandia was used between 2001 and 2007 by GSK, and they failed to give safety data about the drug. They were guilty of misinforming the clients of certain post-marketing studies and concerns of cardiovascular complications.
GSK executed a five-year Corporate Integrity Agreement that requires the company to implement and maintain changes in the way it conducts business (Strategies for Health Care Compliance, 2011). This case is a clear indication that the government is committed to providing consumers with accurate information regarding any prescription drug that may be prescribed by physicians as well as stop the unethical practices of prescription drug manufactures.
