Our Bodies in the Media

In any civilization appearance has a huge impact on the daily lives, of those living in it. Some cultures favor piercings, others strength, some wear clothes, others do not. The contributing factors for how they appear, typically go back to traditional roots. Our culture in the US, although influenced by our history, now has to deal with an almost daily changes seen in the media. It is nearly impossible to keep up with what is “in” and how we are “supposed” to look. With so much advertising and media focusing on a particular self image, there is no doubt why so many people struggle with accepting their self image. Facebook is loaded with shirtless pictures, pictures lifting at the gym, and countless pictures of their beards. Although the intent behind posting these is not meant to be harmful, it does cause a lot of people who do not live up to those standards to get down upon their own body or lack there of. Although social. media is one of the leading contributors to our body image, print media still comes into play.
Print media, although slowly fading away, still has a significant impact on our body image. If you flip through almost any magazine today, you will find professional models in the ads, that have often been photoshopped on top of their already good looks. This can lead to people gaining expectations about their own body, that theoretically can only be obtained using computer software. “Dr. McAneny of the AMA states, “We must stop exposing impressionable children and teenagers to advertisements portraying models with body types only attainable with the help of photo editing software.” And yet, in the last year, Photoshopping has reached an all-time high. It is inescapable.” (beauty redefined) While it looks like people won’t people won't be escaping photoshop anytime soon, we can try and lessen the effects, by perhaps making it required to label images as altered. It is estimated that “10-15% of all Americans suffer from some type of serious eating disorder.” (national eating disorder association) It would be safe to say some of those cases have been influenced by print media and photoshop. Sometimes we can be influenced by things around us, we not usually think of.
Have you ever been shopping for toys with a little brother or kid? Have you noticed all of the action figures and barbies? Well if you have not, these toys can play a role in our body image whether we realize it or not.
