Resolved: That the private ownership of handguns should be banned in the United States.
I have three strong starting points as to why handguns should be banned in the U.S.
A.) Banning handguns makes for a safer environment for obvious reasons.
If handguns are banned, the amount of crazed lunatics with a gun should decrease. And anyone who disobeys the law and tries to harm their environment with a handgun, the ...view middle of the document...
Of course the case would be made for handguns to be used for personal self-defense. But a handgun is not needed for self-defense when there are other options such as pepper spray.
B.) Banning handguns eliminate the chance of small children obtaining a handgun. Several cases have been reported where small children find their parents handgun in the house when the parent is not looking and end up firing it. In fact, gun accidents kill an average of 500 children a year in the U.S. and kill twice as many kids as cancer does according to USAToday. Banning handguns in the USA eliminate the chance of this happening and would make for a safer environment for children at home.
C.) The second amendment stating “The right to bear arms” is outdated. The amendment was created at a time where the federal government found it necessary to have a strong, “well-regulated militia” with the federal government doing the regulating. In addition to this outdated right, there is also the never ending right of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. A right that the children in Sandy Hook were denied the day that 26 students were shot and killed.
