Assignment 1

HRM530
Date: April 22, 2012

Describe your approach to this new client in terms of relying upon knowledge you have gained working with other similar situations.
South Korean business would be the choice of a new client. In order to effectively adhere to their needs the choice of approach would be the regiocentric staffing approach. This approach will allow us to have an understanding of HRM policies that are given across all the subsidiaries. “This approach considers the needs of the entire region and managers from the host country are often selected for managerial positions in their own country and some may be promoted to regional positions” (McGraw-Hill, 2011). They are very generous and forth coming. As Americans we do not understand this concept and are quick to get the deal done.
Another issue may be the time allowed to work. Normally in the States we have a contract that renews every so often. In South Korea they are used to working the same job until they feel like retiring. There is no time stamp on their retirement. Right now that is one of the problems that are upsetting them. The US government has had to cut back on some of the jobs therefore having to let go of some of the Korean Nationals. In order to deal with this overlap in retirement there should be a system already in place when they are hired to let them know that there is a retirement age. If this is not done they will continue to be upset and have protests outside the posts gates.
Explain the ethical dilemma(s) that may arise if you use your expert knowledge of other organizational HRM strategies with the new client.
Ethical dilemmas would be the language barrier and customs. One must be able to learn the language in order to show proper communication. The new client must know that they will be able to understand what is being put out. There should be a clear understanding of their compensation packet, incentives, and performance evaluations. “An HR professional should find someone else to perform a performance evaluation on a person with whom they are friends” (Wolfe, 2011). This statement is very true if an HR professional has found themselves to friendly with the new client. Dealing with new international clients can get a little tricky because they do business much differently than Americans do.
Another ethical dilemma that an HR professional may face with Korean Nationals is to be careful when discussing political views. “Because Koreans are extraordinary sensitive about political matters, foreigners doing business with Korea should avoid taking political sides in any public manner” (De Mente, 1994). By living in Seoul, Korea one can agree that most Koreans are nice to the Americans being there but there are some that show that they do not care at all. The same may be true when trying to establish a relationship with Koreans as new clients.
Discuss your approach to customizing HRM strategy to business strategies.
In order to effectively take on the regiocentric approach effectively with South Korea all concerns must be addressed within the strategy. This should take care of some of the dilemmas as stated before. The retirement issue would be a national concern since...
