Should Marijuana Be Legalized?

“Herb is the healing of the nation, alcohol is the destruction.” –Bob Marley. Bob Marley believed that marijuana should be legalized for anyone and everyone to use how they want to. The legalization of marijuana would be beneficial to the government, and to the many people that suffer from several medical conditions such as nausea and chronic pain. Many others also agree that the legalization of marijuana would significantly benefit America.
The legalization of marijuana for medical use would help out thousands of people with their physical and mental disabilities. First of all, “marijuana helps prevent nausea and vomiting. Two FDA-approved ...view middle of the document...

4% THC, one at 2.5% THC, the other 6% THC and one placebo [source:Doheny, Kathleen].” (5 Common Uses of Medical Cannabis) Over the course of two months, each test subject smoked a random strain (they had no knowledge of the different strengths) three times a day for five days. After the five-day period, the subjects rated their level of pain. The highest dosage of THC (9.4%) was shown to lower the pain level from 6.1 to 5.4 on average. Though a small change, the study notes that most strains sold on the street are at 10% or 15% THC levels and therefore may produce an even lower pain rating [source: Doheny, Kathleen]. Cannabis has helped many patients with insomnia and sleeping issues. “According to the National Cancer Institute, studies testing the effectiveness of cannabis showed that test subjects who inhaled marijuana had “improved mood, improved sense of well-being and less anxiety. Also patients who had injected a cannabis plant extract spray (administered under the tongue) reported more restful sleep.” (5 Common Uses of Medical Cannabis) Medical marijuana can help people with nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, muscle tension, spasms, pain, and insomnia throughout the world.

Furthermore, the legalization of marijuana would create a large market for recreational usage. The government could greatly benefit from the legalization of marijuana. “The state Washington received $500 million in tax revenue since they legalized marijuana for recreational use.” (The Top Ten Reasons Marijuana Should Be Legal) There are thousands of people arrested every year because of small marijuana charges and keeping those people in jail costs the government $168,000 per year. (City’s Annual Cost per Inmate Is $168,000, Study Finds) The amount of money that the government could save and make with the legalization of marijuana is astronomical. “Prison costs would lower because marijuana related inmates cost the U.S. about $1 billion annually to keep them in jail.” (The Top Ten Reasons Marijuana Should Be Legal) Obama wants to pardon any nonviolent marijuana crime because of the expenses that it costs the government to keep the inmates in prison for their small crimes. Also, violence would decrease with the legalization of marijuana. “The University of Texas conducted a new study that said that the legalization of marijuana would reduce some violent crimes such as homicide. The Nation Academy of Science found that in chronic marijuana uses, THC – the active ingredient in pot – actually causes a decrease in aggressive and violent behavior.” (Legalizing Medical Marijuana May Actually Reduce Crime, Study Says) Furthermore, the war on drugs has failed when it comes to marijuana. Marijuana is the largest cash crop in America because of the amount that people distribute,...
