1. Why did VC Brakes’ change effort fail; what were its three major mistakes?
VC Brake’s effort to change failed for three reasons. VC Brake’s effort to change lacked a good sponsor, the removal of obstacles needed for change to be successful, and a sense of urgency. VC Brake’s sponsor was the VP of Operations, James Baynard. James Baynard, according to Ryan, is one of those managers who takes credit, but does not really do anything. Unfortunately for the company, Ryan might be correct. For example, when Ryan asked to be taken off the TQM training to work on the engineering team, James Baynard refused because he wanted to keep up appearances. VC Brakes lacked a sense of urgency when Ryan presented recommendations to proper management. If VC Brakes really wanted to implement change, they would not take such a long time for everything. Issues being resolved over several weeks seemed to be a common theme.
2. Evaluate Ryan’s performance during the change effort. What grade would you give him and why?
Specifically, write a one page email to Ryan in which you provide him useful feedback about his performance and an overall grade
Ryan, this is an evaluation of your performance during the implementation of TQM at VC Brakes. Over the past few months, you and a college have been training management and floor workers on implementing TQM within the company and have been largely unsuccessful. In teaching the principles to the employees at VC Brakes, you had mixed results. You did a very good job of teaching the principles to the floor workers, but you did a very poor job with teaching the principles of TQM to the management. The management seemed to know very little about TQM. If the management does not know TQM, then they cannot enforce TQM controls.
The floor employees and the management did not believe in TQM. It was your job to inspire TQM to the employees, but that did not happen. To be fair, upper management did not support you in your efforts to inspire your fellow workers. You could have sought out different ways of approaching the influencing of your fellow co-workers.
In your effort to train your fellow co-workers on TQM, you have received a B-.
