This can improve our health and thus avoid risks for certain diseases and illnesses.
A good lunch benefits a student by giving him the energy to remain alert during class time. This is true whether the student is in elementary school, high school or college. As long as the student avoids a heavy midday meal, which can cause lethargy and sleepiness, a healthy lunch helps maintain peak academic performance. Make lunch even more beneficial by choosing foods based on their nutritional benefits. Many studies, such as one conducted by Tufts University School of Nutrition, have confirmed that students who are hungry because they have skipped lunch are distracted in the classroom. In addition, studies have shown that malnutrition from habitual undereating can interfere with normal physical and mental development. A proper lunch is considered so important that the USDA conducts the National School Lunch Program to ensure that each student from kindergarten through grade 12 has the opportunity to eat a nourishing lunch.
However, there are people who are busy working or doing certain activities who cannot watch their health that much, especially students who are busy with school works. These people have difficulties in developing good eating habits. Despite their hectic schedule, it is always a must to eat properly. According to Rampersaud, Pereira, Girard, Adams, Metzi (2005) from the University of Florida, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It would support the body and mind of the people in dealing with daily activities. The consumption of breakfast may improve cognitive function related to memory, test grades, and school attendance. It begets the right amount of eating breakfast, which has a good effect in the performance of the students. Bad eating habits can cause overweight or even obesity.
According to a study conducted by Taras and Potts-Datema (2006) of Icelandic School, overweight and obese children do not perform well in their academic performance as compared to their healthy counterparts. Also Reuters Health (2008) “a pharmaceutical industry corporate intranets and health sector information services” declared that the student’s eating habits from several measures of quality diets gives higher chance to the students to pass the exam. They also said that the consistency of this association across various indicators of diet quality gives emphasis to the importance of children’s nutrition not only at breakfast but throughout the day. The study they conducted extends current knowledge in this area by demonstrating the independent importance of overall diet quality to academic performance.
Nicole K. (2010) stated that “foods rich in antioxidants provide essential nourishment to the brain and its function. Say perhaps that this student eats a diet filled with spinach, blueberries, and strawberries. Such foods are high in antioxidants needed to battle free radicals, which damage neurotransmitters.
